# Locations

A Location is a named physical place, such as a building, floor, room, outdoor site, or service area, that you attach Assets and Devices to. Locations can nest under a parent Location to form a hierarchy, carry coordinates and an address for map placement, and link a Dashboard and a Diagram so live views of the site are one click away.

## Overview

Use Locations when your equipment is spread across sites, when you want a map view of the fleet, or when each site should open onto its own dashboard or diagram. A Location is an organizational object: it does not generate data itself.

Locations live under **System → Locations** in the sidebar. The list is a tree: a Location with children expands in place, so a campus can contain buildings and a building can contain floors. The list shows each Location's Asset count and quick links to its Dashboard and Diagram, with a search box, a **Status** filter (All, Enabled, Disabled) and an export button.

## Properties

| Field                          | Notes                                                                            |
| ------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Name                           | Required, 5 to 100 characters. Shown in lists, on cards and on the map.          |
| Parent Location                | Optional. Nest this Location under another to build a location hierarchy.        |
| Dashboard                      | Optional. The Dashboard opened from this Location's links and cards.             |
| Diagram                        | Optional. The Diagram opened from this Location's links and cards.               |
| Image                          | Optional picture shown on the Location's card.                                   |
| Customer and Address           | Optional. Pick a Customer, then one of that Customer's addresses.                |
| Coordinates                    | Set by address search on the map, or entered directly as longitude and latitude. |
| Map Zoom Level, Bearing, Pitch | The camera used when the map flies to this Location.                             |
| Active                         | Whether the Location is enabled. Inactive Locations render muted in the list.    |

## Creating a Location

Open **System → Locations** and click **New Location**. The create dialog asks for the settings above: the name, an optional Dashboard, Diagram and Parent Location, an image, customer and address, and the map placement.

Coordinates can be set two ways in the **Location & Map Settings** card. **By Address** searches on an interactive map and drops a marker; **By Precision** takes longitude and latitude directly. The zoom, bearing and pitch fields control the camera the map uses when it flies to the Location, from a whole-Earth view at zoom 0 down to individual buildings around zoom 15.

Click **Create**. Only the name is required, so it is fine to create a bare Location first and fill in the map placement later.

Deleting a Location permanently removes it and detaches all Assets from it. The confirmation dialog asks you to type the Location's id before it proceeds.

## Location Settings

Opening a Location from the list leads to its settings page, which has four tabs.

**Settings** edits the same fields as the create dialog.

**GeoDraw** draws layers on the map, such as a site boundary or building outline, and styles them. The Location needs its latitude and longitude set before you can draw.

**Assets** lists the Assets attached to this Location. Click **Attach Asset** to pick from Assets that have no Location yet; **Detach** releases one again. An Asset can also be attached from its own edit form by setting its Location field. Devices are assigned separately: each Device form has a **Location** field naming the physical site where the device is installed, so a Device's Location does not depend on any Asset.

**Variables** configures monitored Variables for the Location: each entry names a Device Variable and appears as a live reading on the Location's card and in the map's detail panel.

## Dashboards and Diagrams

A Location's linked [Dashboard](https://documentation.controlcomtech.com/platform/dashboards/overview) and [Diagram](https://documentation.controlcomtech.com/platform/diagrams-detail/overview) are how you jump from a place to its live views. The Locations list shows both as link chips on each row, Location cards on the overview page carry **Dashboard** and **Diagram** buttons, and when a Location has both, opening it asks which one you want: the dashboard with live readings, charts and KPIs, or the diagram with the schematic view.

## The Map

The **Map** page under **Visualization** shows every Location with coordinates on a full-screen map. Nearby Locations cluster at low zoom, and clicking a cluster zooms into it. Locations currently in alarm are marked distinctly, and the sidebar splits the list into **In Alarm** and **All Locations**, with a filter for alarm state.

Clicking a Location flies the camera to it using the Location's stored zoom, bearing and pitch, and opens a detail panel with tabs for its alarms and monitored Variables, its address, its Assets and its metadata. A layer control overlays weather data on the map.
